Session 13: "The Legend of Carl's Gold."
(November 4, 2018)
Via a note sent in the hand of the ex-gladiator Gora, the party lures the bandit chief Sashi to an ambush at an abandoned dockyard in Rajgan's riverside district. Sashi brings his second-in-command Ignominy, as well as various members of his gang, but the adventurers are supported by guards from the Rajgan Swords and some of the party's new lycanthrope friends. Lan pilots the airship to provide air support, with Monkey ready at the forward cannon.
Ward knew Sashi during her circus days, when Sashi was a fellow sword performer who went by the moniker "The Fabulous Carl." Similarly, when the party helped free Ignominy from prison to earn their place in Sashi's gang, Dara recognized her as a fellow warlock, possibly even operating on behalf of the same patron.
Battle begins immediately. Dara hexes Ignominy and eldritch-blasts her. Ward taunts Sashi with vicious mockery. Sashi takes cover on the wreck of a ship abandoned at the dock, and the reinforcements from both sides clash. Ward rushes forward to engage with her sword. Vaelin gallops his horse toward Ignominy and lances her, causing her to teleport away and turn invisible—at least until she summons a fey annis hag into the space in front of Vaelin. The large hag immediately tries to crush the paladin in a deadly hug, but he evades her.
Monkey wields the cannon to deadly effect, obliterating the warlock Ignominy and smashing her through the boards of the dock. (Luckily for young Monkey, she's far enough away that the horror and carnage seem abstract and don't traumatize her.) Dara immediately ensnares Ignominy's spirit and uses it to attack Sashi, who had been sniping at the party from hiding on the abandoned ship.
Seeing his beloved friend turn into a specter and attack him—all while cannon balls are raining down with devastating effect—Sashi implores, "Call her off, for the sake of the gods call her off!" Ordered to drop his weapons and fall on his knees, he does so, consumed with grief and horror. His band of supporters don't know what else to do, so they surrender as well. Ward comes aboard the wrecked ship to capture Sashi, who recognizes her despite her new beard: "Jacoby said you were back in town," referring to the man who spotted her on stage during the welcoming ceremony.
Sashi makes one attempt to offer the party an alternative deal: let him and his gang go, and he'll give the party all of his treasure. Ward instead taunts him about Ignominy; Sashi's face hardens and he says nothing more to their questions.
Sashi and the rest of the prisoners are locked up in the Wind Wyvern's brig to be taken to Lord Gimgem and his Swords. Dara realizes that Sashi surely had a backup plan in case their bid to break Ignominy out of jail had failed, suggesting that Sashi has people on the inside among the city guards. Lord Gimgem promises that he will bring the prisoners directly to Empress Sulana for her to deal with. The party receives a substantial reward in gold for the capture of Sashi and his gang.
Meanwhile, Admiral Pethai, head of the Winged College, has been busy investigating the disappearance of Gargax and his group of disaffected wyvern flyers. She has leads for the party to follow as they prepare to follow Gargax and his band northward, toward the jungles of Lathini.
